How to Show Author Profile Picture in Google Search Results

| October 25, 2011 | 11 Comments

After messing up with google authorship markup for a long time, I have enabled it. Its so simple but tutorials around the web are complicated. If you are a wordpress blogger then this article is helpful for you. I have googled many articles on the internet and found a very few articles useful and when I mixed few of them and experimented a lot on my blog I found the solution to display Google+ author profiles in google search results.

Believe me, its really very easy process. I am trying to make this tutorial very easy for you guys so that even newbies can understand this. This is google’s solution to enable it – click here to see. What you need to do is:

  1. Install this plugin – Allow REL= and HTML in Author Bios
  2. Create  “About me” page. i.e. mine is About.
  3. Create a custom menu
  4. Link google profile to “About me” page
  5. Test your Website
All these 4 steps are further discussed below.
1. Install Allow REL= and HTML in Author Bios : Just install this plugin and activate it.
2. Create “About me” page : Create “About me” page for author and write your brief or detailed information about yourself or your blog. write this code in HTML.
<a href=”” rel=”me”>My Profile</a>
  • Replace “Your ID” with your google profile, like mine is
    <a href=”″ rel=”me”>Anil Sardiwal</a>
  • Don’t forget to add rel=”me”  – Save page!
3. Create Custom Menu : Create custom menu for “About me” page and add it to page/category navigation. Follow these steps:
  • Click on screen options: Check Link Relationship (XFN) and write “author” in Link Relationship box. refer the image below
4. Link to Google Profile: This is the final step of authorship markup. Open your google profile, Edit it and Add a custom link to your profile that points to “About me” page.
 5. Now test your website at google rich snippet tool. Mine shows like this.
Mine one was activated today so it will take some time to show my profile in google search results. Take care of these things – Complete your google profile bio, and put a decent picture and crop it in g+ itself. NOTE: You don’t have to write anything in your wordpress profile bio. Above process will do the rest. If this tutorial doesn’t work for you, please leave a comment below to help me improve this article.

  • I just wonder how long it took for you to have your authorship info shows up?

    • Its still in process. will be done as soon as google re indexes

    • its not showing up currently. i have checked in google rich sni[[et tool and will be publicly  shown as soon as google re indexes

      • I got mine checked with snipet tool and it says profile verified but authorship hasn’t showed up for almost a month.

        • I have checked your site in google rich snippet tool. it shows all well. google will show it as soon as it reindexes your website 🙂

          • Thanks!!!

It didn’t show up even on the new articles I posted. It seems it takes months for some people, and someone also said it is now rolled out primarily for web sites with English contents.

I will be some more patient!

          • I wish it will 🙂 but mine is yet to be shown…

          • oh I thought you got it already….
Someone I know got it 2 month after the implementation then he said it got disappeared…

Seems it takes much longer until Google makes it official feature.

          • ya. they r taking too long to index…

  • Akash

Thanks for the lucid details. But, your author profile picture is not showing yet. Wonder how long it takes before the picture starts showing. I know a few people who got it rather early.

    • Mine was not showing in google search results till today morning but was showing up in rich snippet testing tool. I removed all the rel=me and rel=author links frm the blog. Will do that later…
